The Twelve Signs (Rashis) of the Vedic Zodiac
The twelve rashis — signs — are the second of the three building blocks of every Vedic chart, alongside the nine planets and twelve houses. Each rashi is a 30° band of the sidereal zodiac with its own classical character, ruling planet, and qualities. When a planet sits in a sign, its expression is colored by that sign's nature.
This article covers each sign's essentials. Inside KarmaWheel, tap any sign in your chart for a deeper, chart-specific reading.
How signs work in Vedic astrology
A few classifications apply across all twelve rashis:
- Element: fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
- Modality: movable (1, 4, 7, 10), fixed (2, 5, 8, 11), dual or dvisvabhava (3, 6, 9, 12)
- Gender: odd-numbered signs are masculine, even are feminine
- Day/night: alternating
- Dosha: vata, pitta, or kapha — the Ayurvedic constitution most associated with each sign
These classifications matter for advanced readings — yogas often require movable + fixed combinations, the third house planets (mind quality) are read partly through the sign's element, and so on.

Reading planet-in-sign
Like planet-in-house, every planet-in-sign combination has a classical reading drawn from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and other texts. KarmaWheel's classical readings library matches your specific placements automatically — tap any sign in your chart to see the reading for whatever planet sits there.
A few principles to keep in mind:
- Dignity matters most. A planet in its sign of exaltation is at maximum strength; in own sign, second-strongest; in friend's sign, comfortable; in enemy's sign, weakened; in debilitation, at minimum.
- Sign + house combine. Saturn in the 7th in Cancer (a Cancer Lagna's marriage house) is read very differently from Saturn in the 7th in Capricorn (own sign, much stronger).
- Aspects modify. A debilitated planet aspected by its own sign's lord regains some strength — neecha-bhanga yoga. KarmaWheel's yoga finder catches these automatically.
