The Twelve Houses (Bhavas) of the Vedic Chart
In Vedic astrology, the chart is divided into twelve houses — bhavas — that together cover every domain of human life: body and self, wealth, family, education, romance, work, marriage, longevity, dharma, career, gains, and liberation. Reading a Jyotish chart well is, at its core, the art of understanding how the nine grahas express themselves through the twelve houses.
This article is a quick reference. Inside KarmaWheel, the Lagna banner at the top of any chart shows your 1st-house cusp, and tapping a planet shows which house it occupies in your specific chart.
How houses are numbered
The 1st house begins at the Lagna (Ascendant) — the point of the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. The remaining houses are counted forward from there:
- 1st house: the rising sign, occupied at birth by the eastern horizon
- 2nd house: the next sign forward
- 3rd house: the one after that
- ... and so on around the chart, ending at the 12th, which is the sign just before the Lagna
In a North Indian chart, the diamond at the top is the 1st; the houses move counterclockwise. In a South Indian chart, the houses are fixed in 12 boxes around the perimeter, and the planet positions move. KarmaWheel renders both — see Getting Started for switching between styles.
House classifications
Houses fall into a few overlapping classical groups:
- Kendra (angular): 1, 4, 7, 10. Powerful houses; planets here gain strength
- Trikona (trinal): 1, 5, 9. The most auspicious houses; called dharma trikona
- Dusthana (difficult): 6, 8, 12. Houses of obstacles, hidden things, and loss
- Upachaya (growth): 3, 6, 10, 11. Houses where malefics actually do well — they grow stronger over time
- Maraka (death-causing): 2, 7. Treated carefully in longevity readings
A planet placed in a kendra-and-trikona combination is especially auspicious; a planet placed in a dusthana usually shows obstacles or hidden themes.
The twelve houses
1st House — Tanu Bhava (the body, the self)
Karaka (significator): Sun
Signifies: the physical body, complexion, personality, vitality, longevity, the head, the soul's broad orientation in this life, fame, and all other houses' interactions with the self.
The 1st house is the most important house in the chart. The lord of the 1st (your Lagna lord) and any planets in it set the tone for everything else.
2nd House — Dhana Bhava (wealth, family of origin)
Karaka: Jupiter (for wealth) · also Mercury (for speech)
Signifies: wealth, accumulated savings, the family you were born into, food, speech, the face, the right eye, education in early life, immediate family.
The 2nd is also a maraka — a death-causing house — examined carefully in longevity readings. Jupiter or Venus here gives wealth; Saturn or Rahu can give difficulties with family of origin or money obstacles to overcome.
3rd House — Sahaja Bhava (siblings, courage)
Karaka: Mars
Signifies: younger siblings, courage, initiative, short journeys, communication, the arms and shoulders, hobbies, willpower, neighbors.
The 3rd is upachaya — malefics here often produce courage and grit rather than harm. Mars in the 3rd is classically excellent.
4th House — Sukha Bhava (mother, home, comforts)
Karaka: Moon (for mother) · Mars (for property)
Signifies: mother, home, vehicles, real estate, education (formal degrees), the chest, comforts, domestic happiness, inner peace.
The 4th is a kendra — angular and powerful. A strong 4th house and 4th lord give a peaceful home life and a healthy bond with the mother. The Moon here is classically auspicious.
5th House — Putra Bhava (children, intelligence, past-life merit)
Karaka: Jupiter
Signifies: children, intelligence, romance, creativity, mantras, devotion, speculation, the stomach, the merit (purva-punya) earned in past lives.
The 5th is one of the trikonas — a most-auspicious house. Jupiter in the 5th is classically excellent for children, intelligence, and dharmic life.
6th House — Ripu Bhava / Shatru Bhava (enemies, illness, service)
Karaka: Mars · also Saturn
Signifies: enemies, debts, disease, service, employees, daily work, lawsuits, the digestive tract, competition.
The 6th is dusthana (difficult) but also upachaya (growth). Mars or Saturn in the 6th gives a fighting spirit that overcomes opposition. The 6th lord placed in a dusthana is often good — your enemies destroy themselves.
7th House — Yuvati Bhava / Kalatra Bhava (spouse, partnerships)
Karaka: Venus (in a man's chart) · Jupiter (in a woman's chart)
Signifies: spouse, marriage, business partners, public dealings, contracts, sexuality, the pelvis and reproductive organs.
The 7th is a kendra and one of the most-examined houses. The 7th lord, Venus / Jupiter, and any planets in the 7th together describe the marriage and partner. The 7th is also a maraka, examined in longevity work.
8th House — Ayur Bhava (longevity, transformation, occult)
Karaka: Saturn
Signifies: longevity, sudden events (windfalls, accidents, surgeries), the occult, hidden knowledge, in-laws, inheritance, sexual intimacy, the genitals, moksha through transformation.
The 8th is the most difficult of the dusthanas — examined when reading for longevity, scandal, or sudden change. But planets in the 8th are also classical indicators of mystical or research talent.
9th House — Dharma Bhava / Bhagya Bhava (fortune, father, dharma)
Karaka: Sun (for father) · Jupiter (for dharma)
Signifies: the father, dharma (right action), guru, religious practice, long journeys, higher education, philosophy, fortune in general, the hips and thighs.
The 9th is one of the strongest trikonas — the house of grace. Jupiter, the Sun, or the Lagna lord placed in the 9th gives a fortunate, principled life. Often called the most auspicious house in a chart.
10th House — Karma Bhava (career, status, public action)
Karaka: Sun (for status) · Mercury (for profession) · Jupiter (for dharmic work) · Saturn (for sustained labor)
Signifies: career, public reputation, social status, achievements, the kind of work you do, public visibility, the knees.
The 10th is the strongest kendra by some measures — the digbala (directional strength) house for the Sun and Mercury. The 10th house and its lord describe the shape of your worldly action.
11th House — Labha Bhava (gains, friends, elder siblings)
Karaka: Jupiter
Signifies: gains, income, fulfillment of desires, friends, social network, elder siblings, the calves, hopes.
The 11th is upachaya — malefics here are excellent. Mars, Saturn, Rahu in the 11th classically give material gain. The 11th is often the most "rewarding" house.
12th House — Vyaya Bhava / Moksha Bhava (loss, foreign lands, liberation)
Karaka: Saturn (for loss) · Ketu (for moksha)
Signifies: loss, expenditure, foreign travel and residence, the bed (sleep, sexuality, dreams), spiritual practice, hospitals, hidden enemies, the feet, moksha (liberation).
The 12th is dusthana but its themes are nuanced. A strong 12th lord placed in the 9th, 5th, or 1st can give foreign success and spiritual depth. The Sun in the 12th is classically tricky for the father's longevity but excellent for spiritual life. The 12th is the moksha house — the gate to liberation.
How to read a planet in a house
When you see, say, "Saturn in the 7th," the classical reading is the combination of:
- The natural significations of Saturn (discipline, delay, patience)
- The natural significations of the 7th (spouse, partnership)
- → "Marriage often delayed but rewards patience; partner may be older or carry a Saturnine quality"
KarmaWheel auto-generates these readings for every planet-in-house combination in your chart, drawn from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika, and other classical texts. Open the readings card on any chart to see them.
