Saptamsa (D7) — The Children Chart
The Saptamsa ("seventh-part") is the divisional chart specifically used for children, conception, and progeny. Together with the 5th house and Jupiter of the Rasi, the D7 forms the third leg of children-prediction in classical Vedic practice.
How it's calculated
Each 30° sign is divided into 7 equal parts of 4°17'8" (30° ÷ 7). The mapping rules:
- Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo...): the first part maps to the same sign, then proceeds counter-clockwise
- Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo...): the first part maps to the 7th sign from itself
A planet's longitude in the Rasi determines its sign in the D7. Because the segments are roughly 4° wide, the D7 is moderately sensitive to birth-time precision (less so than the D10 or D60).
What to read in the D7
1. The 5th house of the Saptamsa
The 5th from the D7 Lagna is the children-from-the-children-house's perspective — the deepest indicator. Read:
- Sign on the cusp — what kind of children themes
- Planets in it — Jupiter or Venus = blessing for children. Saturn or Rahu = delay/complication. Mars = strong-willed children. Ketu = past-life karma around children, sometimes detachment.
- The 5th lord of the D7 — well-placed = smooth path; in dusthana = challenges
- Aspects on the D7 5th — Jupiter aspect strongly favors children
2. Jupiter in the D7
Jupiter is the natural karaka of children. Its D7 placement matters even more than its Rasi placement for fertility/progeny questions:
- D7 Jupiter exalted, in own sign, or vargottama — strong children prospects
- D7 Jupiter debilitated, combust, or in dusthana — challenges around children
If Rasi Jupiter looks fine but D7 Jupiter is afflicted, expect children themes to have hidden difficulty.
3. The 7th from the D7 Lagna (in some traditions)
Some readers also consult the 7th house of the D7 because the 7th is the "spouse-fertility" axis. Look at planets in the D7 7th and how they interact with the D7 5th lord.
4. The D7 Lagna itself
The Saptamsa Lagna's sign and lord describe the parent-child relationship style:
- D7 Lagna in Cancer → nurturing, close-knit family
- D7 Lagna in Capricorn → structured, traditional parenting
- D7 Lagna in Sagittarius → philosophical, freedom-supporting
- (etc.)
How to read children prospects
Combine three layers:
- Rasi 5th house and 5th lord — surface indicator
- Rasi Jupiter — natural karaka
- Saptamsa (D7) chart — deep indicator
If all three agree on auspicious indicators → children come naturally and smoothly. If all three agree on challenging indicators → fertility difficulty is likely; medical / spiritual / adoption paths may be relevant. Mixed indicators → mixed experience, often timing-sensitive.
Predicting number of children
Classical methods estimate from: - Number of planets influencing the D7 5th (more = more children, generally) - Strength of D7 Jupiter and 5th lord - Sequence of children-favorable Mahadashas during reproductive years
These are probabilistic estimates. Modern medical interventions and life choices significantly affect actual outcomes.
Predicting timing
Children typically arrive during: - The dasha of a planet placed in the 5th of the Rasi or D7 - The 5th lord's dasha - Jupiter Mahadasha (especially Jupiter in own/exalted in D7) - The 9th lord's dasha (the 9th is "5th from the 5th" — children-of-children themes)
Combined with Jupiter transiting through the 5th, 9th, or natal Moon — the classical conception trigger.
Common D7 patterns
Auspicious for children
- D7 5th lord in own/exalted sign in a kendra/trikona
- Jupiter exalted or in own sign in the D7
- Multiple benefics aspect D7 5th
- D7 Lagna lord linked to a strong 5th lord
Challenging for children
- D7 5th lord debilitated or in a dusthana
- Saturn or Rahu in the D7 5th without benefic mitigation
- Jupiter combust or debilitated in the D7
- D7 Lagna heavily afflicted
A challenging D7 doesn't preclude having children — many people with classically difficult D7s conceive naturally. But the chart suggests the path may require medical support, spiritual practice, or alternative routes (adoption).
A reminder on sensitive reading
Children prospects is one of the most emotionally charged areas of Vedic astrology. Best practice:
- Don't predict "you'll never have children" based on chart alone
- Frame challenging D7s as "work and patience" rather than verdicts
- Always recommend consulting medical professionals for actual fertility concerns
- Consider adoption as a real, classically-valid path — many people with difficult biological-conception charts find their parenting through adoption
