Jaimini Dashas
What it does
Beyond Chara dasha (already in the standard dasha card), the Jaimini tradition has many rashi-based dashas that each emphasise a different life-axis. KarmaWheel computes six of them in one panel:
| Dasha | Starting sign | Direction | Special feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drig | 7th from Lagna | by sign type | Outer-life events, relationships |
| Niryana Shoola | Lagna | forward | Fixed 7y per sign — mortality timing |
| Mandooka (Frog) | Lagna | leaps 5 / 9 | Sudden-event timing |
| Trikona | Lagna | trine each step (4 forward) | Dharma-related events |
| Brahma | Lagna | by sign type | Modified Sudasa from Lagna |
| Padakrama | Karakamsha (AK in D9) | by sign type | Soul-purpose unfolding |
How to find it
Hamburger → CLASSICAL VEDIC → Jaimini Dashas (6 systems).
Direction conventions
For five of the six, the direction follows the classical Jaimini rule:
- Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) — forward
- Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) — backward
- Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) — forward (varies by school)
Niryana Shoola has its own fixed convention (forward, 7 years each). Trikona advances by trine (4 signs forward) every step.
Years per sign
For all except Niryana Shoola, the simplified modern formula:
years = max(1, min(12, planet_count_in_sign + 1))
This is the version used by B.V. Raman and modern Jaimini practitioners. Classical schools (Krishna's BPHS, the Jaimini Sutras themselves) have several variants that disagree on edge cases.
Niryana Shoola uses fixed 7 years per sign, giving a clean 84-year cycle from Lagna.
How to read each
Drig
Reads the outer life — events, relationships, the social-self. Starts from the 7th from Lagna (the "drig" or aspect-point) because Jaimini sees relationships and outer events through the 7th-house lens.
Niryana Shoola
The mortality timing dasha. Each 7-year sign-period has a "shula" (sharp point) that classically indicates a high-stress transit window for life-energy. Use cautiously and only with context.
Mandooka (Frog)
Leaps in 5/9 pattern — alternating between trine forward (5 signs) and the next sign (9 signs forward). Captures sudden, unexpected events that don't fit the smooth-progression dashas.
Trikona
Always advances by trine. Reads dharma, righteousness, fortunate events, and the spiritual unfolding.
Brahma
Modified Sudasa from Lagna. The "creator" dasha — read for foundational life-themes and the original "design" of the chart's unfolding.
Padakrama
The most subtle — it starts from your Karakamsha (the navamsha sign of your Atmakaraka), so its sign sequence is your soul's unfolding, not the body-Lagna's.
Cross-checking with Chara and Vimshottari
When the same lord rules a period in 3+ of these systems simultaneously, the corresponding life-theme is heavily emphasised. When two systems dramatically disagree (e.g. Drig says malefic, Brahma says benefic), the year is mixed.
Limitations
- Rashi-dasha schools differ on year-allocation formulas; we use a simplified single form for consistency.
- Jaimini Sutras (the source text) is famously cryptic; some of these dashas have multiple legitimate interpretations.
