Chart Search & Research — Finding Patterns Across Your Library
Once you've built up a library of saved charts (your own + clients + research subjects + the built-in 3,600+ Famous Charts), the Chart Search / Research feature becomes one of KarmaWheel's most powerful tools. It searches across your entire chart library for specific patterns — placements, yogas, dasha periods, or text — and returns every match.

What you can search
1. By placement
The most common use. Search for charts with a specific planet-in-sign or planet-in-house combination:
- "Saturn in Capricorn"
- "Venus in 7th house"
- "Moon in Pushya nakshatra"
- "Exalted Jupiter"
- "Debilitated Mars"
Results: every chart in your library that has the placement.
2. By yoga
Search for charts that have a specific yoga active:
- "Gajakesari Yoga" — Moon-Jupiter angularity
- "Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga" — any of the five great-person yogas
- "Neecha Bhanga" — cancellation of debilitation
- "Raja Yoga" — kingly combinations
Results: every chart where that yoga fires.
3. By dasha at a specific time
Find charts that were in a specific Mahadasha during a specific year:
- "Charts in Saturn Mahadasha during 2008"
- "Charts in Rahu Antar / Saturn Maha during their 30s"
Useful for studying how a particular dasha lord shows up across multiple lives.
4. By text
Search the description / notes field on saved charts plus the names and bios of famous charts:
- "doctor"
- "musician"
- "born in India"
- "Sade Sati"
Useful for finding charts grouped by life themes.
5. By date range
Search for charts whose birth date falls in a specific range:
- All charts of people born 1960-1969
- All charts of people born in March
- All charts of people born during a specific Saturn transit
Example: studying a specific yoga
Want to understand what "Saturn in 7th from Capricorn lagna" actually looks like in real lives?
- Open Chart Search
- Set placement filter: Saturn in Capricorn AND Lagna in Cancer (Saturn in 7th from Cancer is in Capricorn)
- Or: search for saved/famous charts with Capricorn 7th and Saturn there
- Get the list — typically a dozen or more famous charts match
- Click each chart to study how Saturn-7th has played out in their marriage history
This is gold for understanding classical principles in modern context.
Example: rectification research
If you're rectifying your birth time, looking at famous charts of people who had similar life events at similar ages can show you what dashas and transits tend to coincide:
- Search for charts where Saturn was transiting the 1st house when the person was 28-30
- Filter to charts where the person had a major career transition that year
- See what their natal Saturn placement was, what their active dasha was
This is more useful than studying any single chart in isolation — patterns emerge from the comparison.
Example: synastry research
Find charts you might want to synastrize against:
- Search Famous Charts for "spiritual teachers" (text search)
- Pick a few that match
- Run synastry between your own chart and theirs
- See where your chart aligns / disagrees with theirs
Useful for studying how your chart resonates with figures you admire.
Example: holy day correlation
Find historical events that happened on classical holy days:
- Use date range search filtered to Ekadashi tithis
- Cross-reference with Historical Events database
- Study what kinds of events tend to occur on those days
Combining searches
Chart Search supports compound queries:
- "Saturn in Scorpio AND Mars in Scorpio" — find charts with both planets in Scorpio
- "Atmakaraka is Sun AND person born in India"
- "Sade Sati during 1980s"
Use AND / OR logic to refine.
Performance
For libraries up to a few thousand charts, searches return in under a second. The Famous Charts library alone has 3,600+ entries with detailed metadata, so even a generic search returns useful results immediately.
Practical workflows
For a chart-reading practice
Build a curated "research library" by saving charts of every client (with their permission). Over time, search across them for patterns:
- "What did clients with X yoga have in common?"
- "Which placements correlate with [specific career]?"
For Vedic study
Pick one yoga or one placement at a time. Search every Famous Chart that has it. Read about each person's life. After 20-30 examples, you internalize how that pattern actually plays out.
For rectification
Search for famous charts with similar birth profiles to your client (same era, same general region) and study the dasha-event correlations.
