The Historical Events Database — 140,000+ Events for Research

KarmaWheel includes a built-in database of over 140,000 historical events — from ancient battles to celebrity marriages, from political coups to natural disasters. For each event you can instantly compute the chart at that moment, search by planetary placement, and combine multiple lenses for research.

This is one of KarmaWheel's most underused features. If you're a serious student of Vedic astrology or a research-oriented practitioner, it's gold.

What's in there

The database includes:

  • Wars and battles — start dates, key turning points
  • Political events — coronations, elections, assassinations, treaties, coups
  • Natural disasters — earthquakes, eruptions, floods (with date and location)
  • Cultural events — book publications, film premieres, music festivals
  • Births and deaths of public figures — supplementing the Famous Charts library
  • Scientific milestones — discoveries, expeditions, missions
  • Sports — Olympic openings, championship finals
  • Religious events — major festivals, key dates in lineages

Coverage spans from ancient times to the present, with denser coverage post-1800.

How to access

Open Features → Historical Events. The feature opens with a search interface offering five search modes.

The five search modes

1. This Day in History

Shows every event on today's date across history. Useful for daily reflection — what happened on this day in Vedic-relevant ways?

2. Specific Date

Pick any date; see every event the database knows about for that date. Great for birthday research ("what was happening in the world on the day I was born?").

3. Date Range

Search across a range of days, weeks, or years. Useful for studying themes during a specific historical period.

4. Planetary Placement Search

The most powerful research tool. Search for events that happened with specific planetary configurations:

  • "Every event with Saturn in Scorpio" — pulls 2.5-year windows of Saturn's transit through that sign over centuries
  • "Every event with a Jupiter return" — events at Jupiter's 12-year cycle
  • "Every event with the Moon in Pushya" — auspicious-day events
  • "Every event during a Mars retrograde" — the periods where Mars is moving backward

Combine with date filters to narrow to a specific era.

5. Word / Keyword Search

Search the event description text. Useful for finding events by topic ("plague", "earthquake", "coronation", "discovery", etc.).

Make Chart from Event

Click any event in the results. KarmaWheel offers a Make Chart button that:

  1. Calculates the chart for the event's date
  2. Uses noon UTC at the event's location (since most historical events have date precision but not exact-hour precision)
  3. Falls back to a default location if the event's location isn't specified
  4. Opens the chart in the regular chart view

You can study the chart, save it, run synastry against your own, examine its yogas, and so on — just like any other chart.

Use cases

Birth-time rectification

Pull up well-dated historical events that occurred during your life, find what dasha you were in, what transit was active. This is core rectification work — see Birth Time Rectification.

Studying classical patterns

Want to see how "Saturn in 8th house" plays out in real lives? Search for famous-person births with Saturn in 8th and study what happened to them. KarmaWheel makes the research nearly automatic.

Understanding transits historically

What's the chart for the start of WWI? How does it compare to the chart for WWII's start? Both are in the database — pull up both charts and look for the planetary patterns repeating.

Daily reflection

Use "This Day in History" as a daily contemplation prompt. What happened on this date 100 years ago, 500 years ago, 2000 years ago? What were the planets doing then?

Yoga validation

Studying a particular classical yoga? Pull up famous charts that have it confirmed and see how the yoga's predicted themes actually played out in their lives.

Results panel

For each event, KarmaWheel shows:

  • Event name and one-line description
  • Date (and time if known)
  • Location (if known)
  • A Make Chart button
  • A Web Search button — opens a Google search for more context

Click any event row to expand it for more detail.

Caveats

  • Historical date precision is mixed — some events have minute-precision (well-documented modern events); others have only year-level precision (ancient events)
  • Location precision is mixed — some events have city-level precision; others only continent
  • Charts cast for noon UTC are approximate — useful for planetary-position research, less so for Lagna-specific analysis
  • Data sources vary — most events are from historical records / encyclopedic sources, but the database is curated rather than exhaustive

In KarmaWheel

Open Features → Historical Events. The five search tabs are at the top. Results appear below. Click any result to inspect or generate the chart.

For ongoing research, save important historical-event charts to your Saved Charts library — they become available for synastry, search, and continued study like any chart you've calculated yourself.
