Zodiacal Releasing
What it is
Zodiacal Releasing (ZR) is the marquee predictive technique of the Hellenistic astrologer Vettius Valens (2nd century CE), and it's been the most-discussed "rediscovered" technique in modern Western astrology since Robert Hand and Chris Brennan revived it around 2007.
Periods release — i.e. the time-lord rotates — through the zodiac starting from a chosen Lot. KarmaWheel computes ZR from the Lot of Spirit, which governs the active / career / agency-side life- chapters (the parallel ZR from the Lot of Fortune governs the body, livelihood, and circumstances; not yet implemented).

How the math works
Lot of Spirit
For a diurnal chart (Sun above the horizon at birth): Spirit = Asc + Sun − Moon
For a nocturnal chart (Sun below the horizon): Spirit = Asc + Moon − Sun
KarmaWheel auto-detects sect by Sun's hemisphere and uses the correct formula.
Period lengths (Valens)
Each sign has a fixed L1 period length (in years):
| Sign | Years |
|---|---|
| Aries | 15 |
| Taurus | 8 |
| Gemini | 20 |
| Cancer | 25 |
| Leo | 19 |
| Virgo | 20 |
| Libra | 8 |
| Scorpio | 15 |
| Sagittarius | 12 |
| Capricorn | 27 |
| Aquarius | 30 |
| Pisces | 12 |
L1 (major) periods advance forward through the signs starting from Spirit's sign. Each L1 lasts the sign's number of years.
L2 (minor) periods divide each L1 into 12 sub-periods. Within each L2, the same sign-sequence advances forward through 12 signs. Period lengths within L2 use a uniform-twelfth approximation (years_of_L1 / 12). Some classical sources use sign-based L2 durations — a future enhancement may switch to that.
What KarmaWheel returns
- Sect (diurnal / nocturnal)
- Lot of Spirit position
- L1 periods — the lifetime sequence; the current L1 is highlighted
- L2 periods within the current L1 — twelve sub-chapters
How to read the output
L1 — the chapters of life
Each L1 period is a chapter. Its sign-lord colours the chapter:
- An L1 of Capricorn (27 years!) ruled by Saturn is a long structuring / discipline chapter
- An L1 of Cancer (25y) ruled by Moon is an emotional / domestic / rooting chapter
- An L1 of Aries ruled by Mars is a 15-year war / pioneering / drive chapter
The lord's natal placement tells you what specifically is structured or pioneered for you.
Loosing of the bond
The most famous ZR phenomenon: when an L2 period transitions to a sign that's the same as the L1 sign (or its opposite), the natural sequence "loses the bond" and the next L2 jumps elsewhere. These moments are pivotal — they correspond to dramatic life-shifts (career changes, relationship endings, geographic moves).
KarmaWheel doesn't yet visually flag the loosing-of-the-bond moments; they're identifiable by inspection of the L2 sequence (when an L2 sign matches the L1 sign you're inside).
Peak periods
L1 periods that fall in angular signs (1, 4, 7, 10 from Spirit) are the peak periods — these are the high-tide chapters when work meets recognition.
Pairing with Vimshottari
ZR and Vimshottari give different time-lord verdicts. They agree when both highlight the same planet for a year (rare and significant); when they disagree, you have two parallel layers of meaning, often in productive tension.
A common pattern: a benefic Vimshottari Mahadasha overlapping a challenging ZR L1 (or vice versa) describes a life-window where things look one way externally and feel another way internally.
Limitations
- L2 periods use a uniform-twelfth approximation rather than sign-based durations. This is a deliberate simplification that preserves the broad shape but may differ from canonical Valens by a few months in edge cases.
- KarmaWheel computes ZR from the Lot of Spirit only. ZR from the Lot of Fortune (livelihood, body, circumstances) is a planned future enhancement.
- The "loosing of the bond" detection is not yet visualised.
