Yogini Dasha and Chara Dasha
Vimshottari Dasha is the dominant timing system in Vedic astrology, but it's not the only one. Classical practice often consults multiple dasha systems for the same chart, especially when one system's predictions feel unclear or when looking at a specific life domain that another system handles better.
This article covers two of the most-used alternative systems — Yogini Dasha and Chara Dasha — both available in KarmaWheel via the dasha-tabs on every chart.
Yogini Dasha
A lunar-based dasha system that completes its full cycle in 36 years. Each Mahadasha is short (1–8 years), so events feel timed more crisply than in Vimshottari (where Mahadashas can last 20 years).
The eight Yoginis
The system uses eight named "Yogini" goddesses, each ruling a planet and a Mahadasha length:
| Yogini | Planet | Years |
|---|---|---|
| Mangala | Moon | 1 |
| Pingala | Sun | 2 |
| Dhanya | Jupiter | 3 |
| Bhramari | Mars | 4 |
| Bhadrika | Mercury | 5 |
| Ulka | Saturn | 6 |
| Siddha | Venus | 7 |
| Sankata | Rahu | 8 |
Total: 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8 = 36 years. The cycle then repeats.
Where you start
The Yogini Mahadasha at birth depends on the Moon's nakshatra. Each nakshatra is mapped to a starting Yogini in a fixed sequence. KarmaWheel computes this automatically.
Yogini gives a quicker rotation through planetary themes, useful for:
- Reading short-term life events more precisely
- Cross-checking Vimshottari-based predictions
- Charts where Vimshottari is in a long, slow Mahadasha and timing feels vague
Reading Yogini
Each Yogini goddess has a quality:
- Mangala (Moon) — auspicious, beneficial
- Pingala (Sun) — fiery, sometimes harsh
- Dhanya (Jupiter) — wealth, dharma, expansion
- Bhramari (Mars) — wandering, restless, conflict
- Bhadrika (Mercury) — gentle, learned, refined
- Ulka (Saturn) — challenges, falling, loss
- Siddha (Venus) — accomplishment, success
- Sankata (Rahu) — anxiety, danger, sudden events
The active Yogini's nature colors the period. Combined with the underlying planet's natal placement, predictions sharpen.
Chara Dasha (Jaimini)
A completely different logic from Vimshottari. Chara Dasha is sign-based — it cycles through the 12 signs of your chart in a specific order, with each sign's Mahadasha length determined by the sign's position relative to the Lagna.
The Jaimini logic
Chara is part of the Jaimini system of Vedic astrology — a parallel to Parashari that uses sign-based, not nakshatra-based, methods.
The Mahadashas run through all 12 signs, starting from the Lagna's sign and moving in a direction determined by whether the Lagna is a movable, fixed, or dual sign. The length of each sign's Mahadasha is (distance from sign to its lord) × 1 year, with adjustments for special cases.
Where Chara excels
Chara Dasha is particularly used for:
- Long-term life-direction predictions — entire life chapters
- Career timing — the Mahadasha of the sign containing the 10th lord often marks career peak
- Marriage timing — the Mahadasha of the 7th-house sign often coincides with marriage
- Cross-checking Vimshottari for major events
Many Jaimini practitioners read Chara Dasha first and then use Vimshottari for finer detail.
Reading Chara
For each Mahadasha (a sign), look at:
- Which planets occupy the sign — these activate during the dasha
- The sign's lord — its placement and dignity color the period
- Houses from the dasha sign — the dasha sign itself acts as a temporary Lagna; events in the 7th from it (relationships), 10th from it (career), etc., become foreground
For example, your Cancer Mahadasha makes Cancer-themes (mother, home, comfort) prominent. If Jupiter sits in Cancer in your chart, that Jupiter activates strongly during this period.
When to use which
Vimshottari is the workhorse — use for almost everything.
Yogini when: - You want sharper short-term timing - Vimshottari feels too slow / vague - A specific event date needs cross-checking
Chara when: - Doing a Jaimini-style reading - Working with the Atmakaraka and the Karakamsha - Looking at long-term life chapters - Cross-checking major event timing
Many readings benefit from looking at all three side by side. KarmaWheel's dasha card has tabs for Vimshottari, Yogini, and Chara — switch between them with one click.
In KarmaWheel
On any chart, scroll to the Dashas card. Above the dasha display you'll see three tabs:
- Vimshottari (default) — your standard 120-year nakshatra-based system
- Yogini — 36-year lunar system, all eight Yogini Mahadashas
- Chara — Jaimini sign-based system
Click any tab to switch the display. Click any Mahadasha to expand it and see Antardashas. The "current" period in each system is highlighted.
