Secondary Progressions

What it is

Secondary progressions advance the natal chart by the rule:

One day after birth = one year of life.

So at age 30, the progressed positions are computed for the chart 30 days after the actual birth date. This is the dominant progression technique in modern Western astrology — virtually every modern Western astrologer leads with secondary progressions.

The mathematics is simple but the meaning layer is rich: as the Moon progresses ~13°/year, the Sun ~1°/year, and the Asc/MC progress with the daily rotation, your inner-life psyche evolves along a slow internal trajectory parallel to outer transits.

How to find it

Hamburger → WESTERN → Secondary Progressions. Pick a target year; the panel shows progressed positions for every planet plus the progressed ascendant.

How to read

The most-watched progressed points:

Progressed Sun

Advances ~1° per year through the zodiac. Crosses one sign every ~30 years. The progressed Sun's sign is your current ego-evolution phase — for someone born with Sun in Aries, by age ~30 the progressed Sun moves into Taurus, shifting from pioneer-energy to embodied stability.

When the progressed Sun changes signs, life often re-organises. When it conjuncts a natal planet (a few-month event), that planet's themes activate strongly for a year or two around the conjunction.

Progressed Moon

Advances ~13°/year — a full zodiac in ~28 years. The progressed Moon's sign is your current emotional theme for the ~2.3 years it sits in each sign. Aspects from the progressed Moon to natal points are short, intense activations (~2-3 months) — these are the fine-grained mood-and-circumstance triggers.

Progressed Ascendant

Advances roughly 1° / year, sometimes faster or slower depending on declination. When it crosses into a new sign, your outward style shifts.

Progressed Lunar Phases

The relationship of progressed Moon to progressed Sun gives an 8-phase 28-year cycle (New, Crescent, First Quarter, Gibbous, Full, Disseminating, Last Quarter, Balsamic). Each phase has its own characteristic life-quality. KarmaWheel's panel gives the raw positions; phase derivation is straightforward from the Moon-Sun separation.

Pairing with other techniques

Secondary progressions work with transits, not against them:

  • Transits describe outer events
  • Progressions describe inner evolution
  • Solar arc directions describe sequential life-events triggered by the progressed Sun's motion

When a transit, progression, and solar arc all hit the same natal point in the same year — that's a major life-event signature.

Caveats

  • Tropical positions are used (Western convention). KarmaWheel computes them regardless of your natal-chart ayanamsha setting.
  • Speed of the progressed Moon depends on natal lunar speed; over a lifetime this averages ~13°/year but varies year-to-year.
  • The progressed Asc requires the natal birth time to be accurate. Garbage in / garbage out — rectify first if your time is loose.
