Rahu and Ketu Deep Dive — The Lunar Nodes

Rahu and Ketu are the chhaya grahas — shadow planets. They have no physical bodies; they're the two points where the Moon's orbital path crosses the Sun's apparent path (the ecliptic). Yet in Vedic astrology they're given full planet status and are considered among the most powerful forces in any chart.

They always sit exactly 180° apart — Rahu in one sign, Ketu in the opposite sign. Both are always retrograde in the Vedic ephemeris (their motion is technically backwards relative to the planets).

What they signify

Rahu — North Node

Significates: unconventional desires, foreign things, technology, intoxication, fame, fascination, ambition, illusion, sudden gains and losses, eclipses, the unknown, materialism, anything that doesn't fit traditional categories.

Rahu is insatiable. Whatever it touches, it amplifies and stretches toward more. Its cravings are intense and don't easily satisfy.

Ketu — South Node

Significates: moksha, detachment, spirituality, mysticism, secrets, surgery, intuition, separation, the past, hidden things, eclipses, asceticism, anything that's been mastered and now released.

Ketu is detached. Whatever it touches, it's already finished with — there's a "been there, done that" energy. Its mastery is complete; its interest has moved elsewhere.

The karmic logic

The classical interpretation: Rahu and Ketu describe karma carrying forward from past lives.

  • Ketu = what the soul has already mastered in past lives. Skills, themes, areas where the soul is already advanced. Often produces precocious natural ability that the person undervalues because it feels effortless.
  • Rahu = what the soul is here to learn this life. New territory, unfamiliar themes, areas of intense fascination but inexperienced execution. Often produces obsession, dramatic events, and ultimately deep growth.

Reading Rahu and Ketu together gives you the karmic axis of the chart — what's been done, what's being learned.

Dignities

Classical dignity for Rahu and Ketu is debated. Different traditions give different exaltations:

Most-common modern view: - Rahu: exalted in Taurus (some say Gemini), debilitated in Scorpio (some say Sagittarius) - Ketu: exalted in Scorpio (some say Sagittarius), debilitated in Taurus (some say Gemini)

KarmaWheel uses the standard exaltation/debilitation conventions but you'll see classical sources disagree.

Friendships: - Rahu treated like Saturn (some say Venus) - Ketu treated like Mars (some say Saturn)

These are amplifiers more than direct expressers — Rahu and Ketu mostly take on the qualities of the planets and signs they associate with.

Rahu in each house

Rahu intensifies, expands, and pulls in unfamiliar / foreign / unconventional themes. House by house:

  • 1st: dramatic personality, often unconventional appearance, ambition; sometimes addictions or obsessions
  • 2nd: intense relationship to wealth and family-of-origin; sudden gains and losses with money
  • 3rd: bold communication, unconventional siblings or friends, foreign-language fascination
  • 4th: distance from mother, foreign relocation, unconventional home life
  • 5th: unconventional children themes, speculative gains, intense romantic obsession
  • 6th: powerful service capacity, defeats enemies, sometimes addictions; classically excellent house for Rahu
  • 7th: foreign or unconventional spouse, fascination with the partner; sometimes turbulent marriage
  • 8th: occult interest, sudden transformations, inheritance themes, longevity work
  • 9th: unconventional dharma, interest in foreign religions, complicated relationship to father
  • 10th: dramatic public reputation, fame in unconventional fields, sometimes scandal; classically strong
  • 11th: extraordinary gains, foreign-source income, unusual friendships; classically the best Rahu house
  • 12th: foreign relocation, mystical depth, sleep disturbances, hidden enemies

Ketu in each house

Ketu detaches, sometimes severs, often producing past-life mastery alongside present-life disinterest:

  • 1st: spiritually-oriented personality, modest appearance, sometimes detached from worldly identity
  • 2nd: detached relationship to wealth or family of origin
  • 3rd: independent siblings, communication that's spiritually-inflected
  • 4th: detached from home or mother, sometimes distant home country
  • 5th: spiritual children, mantra power, but also detachment from procreation
  • 6th: powerful resistance to disease, mystical service, sometimes chronic conditions transcended through spirituality
  • 7th: spiritual or detached spouse, sometimes celibacy or late marriage
  • 8th: outstanding occult capacity, mystical research, healing power
  • 9th: detached from conventional dharma, mystical spirituality, sometimes guru-loss themes
  • 10th: career detachment, sometimes career as a service to something larger than self
  • 11th: detached from social network, fewer but deeper friends
  • 12th: profound moksha potential, deep meditation, foreign retirement

The Rahu-Ketu axis

Rahu and Ketu's opposition creates the chart's primary karmic axis. Whatever house they sit in is your "polarity" of growth:

  • Rahu in 7th, Ketu in 1st → karmic work involves relationships; you've already mastered the self in past lives
  • Rahu in 10th, Ketu in 4th → karmic work involves public action; you've mastered home / inner life
  • Rahu in 5th, Ketu in 11th → karmic work involves creativity / love / children; mastery of social network from past lives
  • Rahu in 9th, Ketu in 3rd → karmic work involves dharma / higher learning; mastery of communication and direct courage from past lives

In each case, Rahu's house calls for new growth (often through obsession, drama, and gradual learning), while Ketu's house represents already-mature capacity that you may undervalue or be ready to release.

Eclipse points

Rahu and Ketu mark the eclipse points — solar and lunar eclipses occur when the Sun and Moon are near these nodes. Eclipse degrees in your chart (around the natal Rahu and Ketu) are sensitive points; transits to them carry extra weight.

Rahu and Ketu transits

Rahu and Ketu move retrograde through one sign every ~18 months. Their transits over natal placements bring intense activation:

  • Rahu transit over a natal planet: amplifies that planet's themes dramatically; often produces obsession or sudden events
  • Ketu transit over a natal planet: detaches you from that planet's themes; often produces release, ending, or spiritual completion

A Rahu / Ketu transit through your natal Lagna or Moon is a major life-period — about 18 months of identity reformation.

Working with Rahu

Rahu responds to: - Conscious channeling — direct its insatiable energy into productive obsessions (study, mission, creative work) rather than addictive ones - Saturn-like discipline (Rahu shares some qualities with Saturn) - Mantra: Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah (or simpler Om Rahave Namah) - Charity — donating to the marginalized, the foreign, the unusual - Ganesha worship — Ganesha removes obstacles Rahu creates

Working with Ketu

Ketu responds to: - Spiritual practice — Ketu loves moksha-orientation - Mantra: Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah (or simpler Om Ketave Namah) - Service to monks, mystics, the spiritually-inclined - Subramanya / Karttikeya worship — Ketu's classical deity
