Dasamsa (D10) — The Career Chart
The Dasamsa ("tenth-part") is the divisional chart most relevant for career, profession, and public reputation. After the Navamsa (D9), it's the most-consulted varga in modern Vedic practice. If you want to understand someone's vocational path — what work they're called to, how successful they'll be, when their career peaks — the Dasamsa is where to look.
How it's calculated
Each 30° sign is divided into 10 equal parts of 3° each. The first 3° of any sign maps to a specific sign according to fixed rules:
- For odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo...), the first 3° maps to the same sign, then proceeds counter-clockwise
- For even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo...), the first 3° maps to the 9th sign from itself
A planet's longitude in the Rasi determines its sign in the Dasamsa.
Because the segments are only 3° wide, birth time precision matters. A few minutes of error can shift a planet from one Dasamsa sign to another.
What to read in the D10
1. The Dasamsa Lagna
The sign rising in the D10 is the Dasamsa Lagna. This sign — and its lord — describe the style of public action:
- D10 Lagna in Aries → pioneering, entrepreneurial, military, athletic
- D10 Lagna in Cancer → nurturing professions, hospitality, public service
- D10 Lagna in Capricorn → traditional, hierarchical, government, long-tenured
- (etc.)
2. The 10th house of the Dasamsa
The 10th from the Dasamsa Lagna is the deepest career indicator. Read:
- Sign on the cusp — what kind of work
- Planets in it — color the work
- Aspects on it — bring further influences
- The 10th lord of the D10 — where it sits in the D10
A strong 10th lord in the D10, well-placed and aspected by benefics, strongly indicates professional success. A 10th lord in a dusthana (6, 8, 12 from the D10 Lagna) often shows career struggles or unusual paths.
3. The career planets in the D10
The four natural career karakas — Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn — each tell a story when read in the D10:
- Sun in D10 — leadership, government, status; strong Sun gives recognition and authority
- Mercury in D10 — communication-based work, writing, commerce, intellect
- Jupiter in D10 — dharma-aligned work, advisory, teaching, finance
- Saturn in D10 — sustained labor, structural work, service
The strongest of these in the D10 often dominates the actual career direction. KarmaWheel highlights each planet's dignity in the variant chart.
4. The Atmakaraka in the D10
The Atmakaraka (highest-degree planet in the Rasi) in the D10 reveals the soul's chosen career path. Many traditions consider the Atmakaraka's D10 placement nearly equal to the chart's Rasi 10th house for vocational analysis.
Common Dasamsa patterns
Strong career indicators
- Strong 10th lord in own/exalted sign in the D10
- Atmakaraka in a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) in the D10
- Multiple career karakas (Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn) all well-placed in D10
- A Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga active in the D10
- The 10th lord linked to a benefic in the D10
Career-challenge indicators
- 10th lord debilitated in the D10
- Atmakaraka in a dusthana (6, 8, 12) in the D10
- The D10 Lagna lord weak or in a dusthana
- All career karakas afflicted by malefics
- A weak Sun in the D10 — affects authority and visibility
Reading approach: Rasi → D10 layered
Always read the Rasi 10th house first. The D10 deepens it:
- Rasi 10th: what the career looks like externally
- D10 patterns: what the career actually is from the inside
- D10 Atmakaraka: what the soul came to do for work
- Active dasha + transits: when the career unfolds
If the Rasi 10th is afflicted but the D10 looks great → the career has surface obstacles but inner strength; success likely comes through patience and inner alignment.
If the Rasi 10th looks great but the D10 is afflicted → the career appears successful externally but feels unfulfilling or unstable.
When both agree, predictions are most confident.
Multi-career patterns
Some D10 patterns indicate multiple distinct career stages:
- D10 Lagna in a dual sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) — career has chapters
- Strong Mercury aspecting D10 — variety, adaptability
- Mahadasha changes that bring different career karakas to the foreground
Other patterns indicate one consistent track:
- D10 Lagna in a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius)
- Strong Saturn in the D10 — long, structured tenure
- Sequential dashas of similar career karakas
Modern people often have multi-stage careers; the D10 confirms whether your chart is set up for that.
